This week, two new bus lines are going into service in Israel: designed for Palestinians only. The move comes ostensibly to make life easier for the tens of thousands of Palestinians who live in the West Bank but work in Israel. Unfortunately, motives might not be so pure. There have been numerous reports of Israeli settlers in the West Bank complaining about having to ride with Palestinians and even footage of Palestinians being illegally forced to get off buses. Unfortunately, the shock lies only in the act of making it semi-official. When Israeli media reported that the country is segregating buses in the West Bank, the only shift is that this looks like an approved form of the sort of petty apartheid that Israel has always denied practising.
